At our most recent rehearsal, Monday 6th June, we presented a cheque to Andrea Salmon, Education Program Co-ordinator for Multiple Sclerosis Limited. The funds donated represent the final part of a process that began around a year ago. Our learning song files over the last year have been prepared for us by John Evans, a member of the Welsh Choir. He requested that rather than paying him a small fee per choir member for his work that we instead make a donation to a charity of our choice. After discussion the committee arrived at a recipient based on members’ experiences with sufferers of neurodegenerative disorders and the great support received from the local branch (Blackburn) of the MS society. There will be a report in the Maroondah Leader with an accompanying photograph in the coming week.
In addition we announced to the members that one of our own, John Williams, a founding member no less, will be the recipient of a Deakin Community Award at the Awards ceremony night, 9th June, 6.30 to 9pm at Yarra Valley Grammar, George Wood Performing Arts Centre, Kalinda Road, Ringwood. Several months ago, the President, Miriam Ford, nominated John Williams for a 2016 Deakin Community Award after receiving an email from the office of Michael Sukkar, our local MP. These awards recognise the invaluable contribution volunteers make to our community. John has been honoured with an award and it will be great to have choir members present on the night. He will also be entered into the Seniors (over 65 years) as well as the Open Category. Thank you John for organising some tickets for us at Monday night’s rehearsal. We look forward to seeing you all there for the celebration. Congratulations John – the choir greatly appreciates your continued presence and work on behalf of all of us.
